Criminal Cases in the Jefferson County Courts
Jefferson County splits criminal court cases by jurisdiction. Superior Court is the felony trial court, and its Clerk is the official custodian of felony case files. District Court handles misdemeanors, criminal traffic and nontraffic charges, preliminary felony matters, and Port Townsend municipal cases under contract. That division determines where to search and which counter can authenticate a result.
Both courts sit in the Jefferson County Courthouse at 1820 Jefferson Street in Port Townsend. The Superior Court Clerk serves the public in Room 210, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at 360-385-9125. District Court uses the same street address and can be reached at 360-385-9135. Free inspection is available for public Superior Court documents. Copies, certification, sealed material, and any file that does not appear online require help from the proper clerk.

Jefferson County Superior Court Files
The Superior Court Clerk connects the online felony indexes to the official Jefferson County criminal court record. Its court-records page explains online coverage and points readers toward public documents. The county page shown below is useful because it makes the limits of remote access plain before a search begins.
The clerk remains the final source when the index is incomplete, a certified copy is needed, or a public document falls outside the archive’s date range. A known case number is the best locator. If none is known, provide the party name and a useful filing-year range. The current clerk notice lists digital copies at $0.50 per page and special search or written-report work at $30 per hour or portion, while counter inspection of public documents is free.
Courthouse entry includes magnetometer screening and X-ray inspection of belongings. Weapons, including folding pocketknives, are prohibited. Exterior lockers are near the flagpole on the northwest, Cass Street side. Accessible parking is on the east side, and an elevator runs from the basement to the upper floors.
How to Search Case Records
Start broad, then move to the Jefferson County court that owns the file. The statewide index is a locator, Odyssey provides Superior Court case information, Digital Archives holds many public Superior Court documents, and re:SearchWA serves District Court. None of those tools changes the Jefferson County clerk’s role as custodian.

Three Jefferson County Court Search Layers
Jefferson County Superior Court records have three remote layers. The Washington Courts index locates a case but is not the official file. Odyssey Portal lets an anonymous user view case information, yet documents and restricted cases are unavailable without the proper authorization. The portal interface pictured below represents that middle layer.
That image helps explain why a case can appear in Odyssey while its filed papers remain out of reach. Registration does not itself guarantee document rights. Clerk authorization controls elevated access.
The third layer is the Washington State Digital Archives collection. It searches by case number or keyword and offers downloadable public PDFs within its coverage. Cases started on or after January 1, 2010 generally include all public documents. For older cases, the collection generally includes documents filed after November 2017. Records processed that day usually appear after 5:00 p.m., so a same-day gap may be a posting delay rather than a missing Jefferson County court case. Use the archive for public copies, but use Jefferson County Room 210 for older material, certification, and any question about the completeness of a file.
What the Case File Shows
A Jefferson County criminal court file tracks the allegation after prosecutors file it and records what the judge does. It is not the police narrative and not the jail intake profile. The complaint or information states the filed charges, the docket lists events in time order, and the judgment and sentence show the outcome. A Jefferson County jail roster charge can differ from the information later filed by the prosecutor. Jefferson County Court File Terms
Several short Jefferson County court terms carry more weight than their length suggests. Reading them in sequence prevents a pending charge from being mistaken for a final result.

A dismissal ends a charge without a conviction, but it does not itself erase the booking, police report, or every index entry. Likewise, a plea agreement is a proposed resolution subject to court action. Check the judgment or final disposition entry before drawing a conclusion.
The charge class also helps route the case. RCW 9A.20.021 sets statutory maximums, not a presumed sentence. The charged offense and Washington sentencing law can change the actual result.

Stages of a Criminal Case
A Jefferson County criminal case starts when the Jefferson County prosecutor files a complaint or information. The county's Criminal Department describes referral review, filing, hearings, trial, sentencing, and restitution work. The Jefferson County court states the charge at arraignment and takes a plea. Pretrial work can include motions, discovery, release conditions, and negotiations. The case then reaches a plea, trial, dismissal, or other disposition. A conviction is followed by judgment and sentencing, with later orders added to the Jefferson County court record.

Jefferson County Municipal Case Route
Port Townsend does not use a separate practical municipal courthouse or independent case portal. The Washington Courts directory routes Port Townsend municipal matters to Jefferson County District Court. This includes city misdemeanors and citations within the court’s contracted function, while felonies proceed in Superior Court.

The local page anchors a search to the correct court before a reader enters re:SearchWA. It also prevents a Port Townsend police-report request from being sent to the Jefferson County court clerk. Access & Restrictions
Jefferson County judicial records follow General Rule 31, not the Washington Public Records Act route used for county agency files. The county's judicial-record request notice directs court files to the relevant court. Court records are presumptively open unless a rule, statute, or court order restricts them. Working papers and records from outside agencies are not court records merely because the court refers to them.
Sealed cases and confidential documents may not appear in public searches. Victim information, juvenile material, minors’ data, and personal identifiers can be restricted or redacted. An online absence therefore does not prove that no case exists. Ask the Jefferson County clerk whether the search is incomplete, the file predates online coverage, or access is legally restricted. Older Jefferson County Court Records
When a Jefferson County Superior Court case began before 2010, Digital Archives may not contain its full public file. Search the known case number or litigant keyword first. Federal criminal cases take a different route. Jefferson County is within the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington, but complete federal dockets do not appear in county portals or WATCH. PACER is the federal docket and filed-document system, subject to sealing and redaction. Through 2026, PACER lists a $0.10 per-page fee capped at $3 per document, with quarterly charges of $30 or less waived. Search-result pages can still be billable.
